Your Children’s Instructors

We understand that you as parents are concerned not just about what your child is learning, but also who they are learning it from.  Our Instructors are selected for their love of teaching, their caring for children, and their ability to make learning fun for all ages.  Along with teaching self defense and character development skills our Instructors model the behaviors that you want for your children.

Family Karate creates an atmosphere of discipline and fun that promotes self control, improved attention, and an increased ability to follow directions.  Teamwork, taking turns, and interacting confidently with peers are also an important part of our training.  Add that to the self protection skills, balance, coordination, and strength training and you get an activity with benefits for every student!

Our Instructors take the fun of learning martial arts seriously – very seriously!  Your children’s Instructors at Family Karate are all talented, caring teachers who are:

  • Extensively trained and certified by the World Martial Arts Ranking Association
  • Finger-printed and background checked by the California Department of Justice
  • CPR and First Aid trained, and TB screened
  • Almost without exception, parents whose children are Family Karate students

Joe Carroll, Head Instructor

Joe Carroll

Head Instructor, 5th Degree Black Belt

Mr Carroll began his training with Family Karate over 20 years ago.  He achieved his Black Belt in 1993 and his Instructor Certification soon after.  Since then he has earned his way to 5th Degree Black Belt and Senior Instructor, and has been responsible for the 4S Family Karate campus since its inception in January of 2003.

Mr Carroll’s vision for the 4S Family Karate studio is to support students of all ages in improving their self confidence and their ability to defend themselves.  In 20 years Mr Carroll has trained thousands of children in self defense, and just as importantly in self control, self esteem, and respectful behavior.

He has worked with students as young as 3 years old as well as those over 73 years young.  He has years of experience working with ADHD children, autistic spectrum students, and the physically challenged.

The goal for all students is to reach the rank of Black Belt, and Mr Carroll’s personal goal is for each of them to also become respectful, confident adults and community members.

Mr Carroll is married to a school teacher in the Poway Unified School District and is the father of twin toddler girls. He is supported by a wonderful, caring teaching team who are themselves parents, too.
